General Questions
I received an email about a web migration. Why was it sent to me?
If you received an email about the migration it is because you are listed as the owner or contact person for a web account on Veritas (www.indiana.edu, www.iun.edu, www.iuk.edu) or Champion (www.iupui.edu). If you should no longer be associated with a web account on Veritas or Champion, please contact IU Webmaster and we will remove you from the account record(s) and you will receive no further emails from us.

How can I find out which of my accounts are impacted by this migration?
To view a list of Veritas/Champion accounts you own (authenticate with your personal username/passphrase):

Account Status Report

For all accounts listed, you will be required to test and request migration in order to keep those sites active after May 12th. You may also contact IU Webmaster and we will be glad to provide you with the list of accounts you own or any accounts which have you listed as contact person.

Why do I need to test my web account on the new server?
Since Veritas and Champion have different operating systems than Webserve, we want to make sure that your site will function properly on the new server before it is moved into production. By permitting you to test your site on the new server while your web site is still located on Veritas/Champion, if there are any issues we can work with you on resolving them without it impacting your production web site.

Do I need to do anything to have my web account migrated?
Yes. After you have tested the web site on the new server and are satisfied with the results, the owner will need to submit a form to request migration of the account. Accounts will not be migrated unless this form is submitted. Additional information and the link to the form can be found at: Finalize Web Migration

What is the deadline for testing and migrating my site?
You will have through May 12th to test and request migration for your web site. If an account owner does not submit the form to finalize migration for their account on or before May 12th, the account will no longer be accessible after that date. The files left on Veritas/Champion will be available for restoration for six months following the end of migration.

Testing Your Account on Webserve

How do I test my site?
We have developed two checklists. Using either checklist will help you determine whether your account is ready for migration. There is a Checklist for Simple Sites for those accounts that consist mainly of static HTML pages. There is also a Checklist for Complex Sites for accounts with complex applications or those developed using web programming languages such as PHP, Perl, etc.

How do I view the web pages in my Webserve account while my production account is still on Veritas/Champion?
You will be able to test your web pages on Webserve by using a special URL that will set a cookie in your browser. (For information on cookies and what they are, see: http://kb.iu.edu/data/agwm.html.) The presence of this cookie will be detected by load balancers and will direct your browser to the content located on Webserve. If you have title tags in your file, the title will be modified to indicate that you are viewing files on Webserve. For further information on this, see: Viewing your site on the Linux server.

Will the web site address for my account stay the same after my account has fully migrated?
Yes, the account name and the web site address you use after your account has permanently migrated to the new Linux server will be the same as what you use now.

What is the server/host name that I will use to connect to the new web server?
The server name you use to connect will be:

webserve.iu.edu
Will I have to move or update the content of my account on the new Linux web server?
We will automatically copy the files over to the new environment. This will be done on a nightly basis with options for you to control how the synchronization behaves. For information on this process, see: Synchronization Process.

How much disk space will I have available to me on the Linux web server?
Once your account has migrated to the new environment, you will have 1GB of average disk space usage available to you for free with a nominal annual fee of $4 for each additional 1 GB block over the amount allotted for free.

Software Changes
What upgrades will be available to me on the new server?
We will be making several upgrades, including PHP5, Perl 5.8.8. The MySQL servers will eventually be moved to MySQL 5 as well. Information on the MySQL upgrade will be sent to account owners as soon as we have that information available. For a list of changes see Software Changes. In addition, as stated above, your account on the new web server will have 1GB of average disk space available for use.

I have binary files in my account. Will they continue to function?
Binary files are incompatible in the Linux environment so C programs will need to be re-compiled. DBM and GDBM files for perl/php are not compatible. For additional details on migrating binary files, see (you will be required to authenticate using an IU network ID): DBM Files. We will write a corrected new binary for Transform and various e-commerce varieties of Transform and E-Store. For details on this, see: Transform Utility.

Will I need to make any changes to my forms or Transform templates to get them to run on the new web server?
In most cases, you will not need to change your forms or templates and they will function in the same manner as they do now. There has been a change made to Transform that may impact your forms. For details, see (you will be required to authenticate using an IU network ID): Transform Utility.

Will my cron jobs continue to run on the new environment?
Cron files will be copied over but the job will not automatically run. You will need to register your cron jobs again. For information on how to do that see step 3 of the Cron User's Guide

Will I be able to access the streaming server or the MySQL servers from my Linux account during migration? Will I need to make any changes?
The streaming server and the MySQL servers will be available. Owners of accounts that are enabled for streaming should see the following document for information on how the migration will impact the streaming service: Migrating Streaming Enabled Accounts. If your site uses applications that make any modifications to a database on the MySQL server, you should understand the implications before testing your site. If during testing your applications make changes to a database, these changes will be reflected in your production database unless you make modifications to your applications on Webserve so that it points to a test database instead.

I use IU's counter service on my site. Will that data be maintained when my account is migrated or will the counter get reset?
Current counter data will be migrated when the customer instructs us to make the Linux-based website "live". This should minimize counter discrepancy issues.

Will the same text editors be available on the Linux web server?
All standard "built-in" UNIX text editors will be available. In addition, Linux has some new text editors such as Nano which is an extended version of Pico which includes more features, configuration options, and a search and replace function.

Ending Migration
When I'm ready for my account to go "live" in the new environment what steps will I take?
When you are ready to migrate your site and go into production on Webserve, the owner will be required to submit a form requesting to finalize migration of that account. For information on the process and a link to the form, see: Ending Migration of an Account.

After my account is migrated to the new Linux server, will I still be able to access my account on the old server?
After you have migrated your account, the Veritas/Champion account will eventually be locked and you will no longer have access to it. Once the account has migrated, you should begin using webserve.iu.edu as the login to your production account.

What will happen to my account if I do not take any action during the migration?
Part of the migration process will require the owner of an account to take action by submitting a form to end migration for that account. The owner must submit the form on or before May 12th to end migration of the account to move it into production on Webserve. If no form is submitted, the site will become inaccessible after May 12th. It is therefore critical that account owners take action and submit the form to end migration for their account during the migration process if they wish to keep their web site active. If you own accounts on Veritas or Champion that you no longer need, please submit a Web Account Delete Request Form. If you need assistance in identifying which accounts you own, please contact the IU Webmaster.
