Passphrase Change

New Method to Reset Network Passphrases for Veritas/Champion Account Owners

To login to Webserve, you will need to use the network passphrase associated with your Veritas or Champion account username. If the network passphrase for the Veritas or Champion account username is unknown, the owner may reset it by going to:

Passphrase Reset Tool

To access this tool, you must be the owner of the web account, and log in using your personal IU Network ID username and passphrase. The passphrase reset tool will change the Network ID passphrase associated with your Veritas or Champion account. It will not reset the password you use to log into veritas.ucs.indiana.edu but it will reset the login on champion.iupui.edu

You can only use this tool for group accounts that had an account on Veritas or Champion. If you have other group accounts that never existed on Veritas or Champion or you need to reset your personal passphrase, you will have to reset it by following the directions found in this KB document: http://kb.iu.edu/data/baak.html

Using the utility above will change the network passphrase for both the web and email accounts for that username. For example, changing the passphrase for a web account with the address http://www.indiana.edu/~department would also change the passphrase for the email account department@indiana.edu.

For additional information about the change, see below.

Overview

To login to Webserve, you will need to use the network passphrase for the account which may be different than the login password you have been using on Veritas. For Veritas account owners who are also using email with their web account name (i.e., account@indiana.edu), the password you use to access the email account is the password you will use to login to your web account on Webserve. While Champion accounts will also migrate to Webserve, these accounts currently use network passphrases to authenticate which means Champion account owners should not experience any login changes unless a local password was previously set using the passwd command while logged into the account. In such situations, the passphrase may be different than the local password that is being used to authenticate.

Why is this change being made?

By using network passphrases, security is enhanced, you will be able to use one passphrase to access all accounts in your group/departmental username, and you will be able to use Passphrase Maintenance to manage the passphrase for your account.

Who does this change impact?

This change will impact anyone who logs into an account on Veritas and, in special cases, Champion (as noted above).

How will it impact me?

If you do not know the network passphrase for the web account you will not be able to login to the account on Webserve. However, the owner may make use of the Siteshare Service as a method of access to the account on Webserve without needing to use the network passphrase. Authentication using Siteshare is based upon personal usernames and passphrases. For more information on this, see: Siteshare User Guide

Can I check to see if I know the network passphrase for the account?

Yes, and it is recommended that you do so as soon as possible. You may do this by going to the Passphrase Authentication Test. This application will first check that the account name you provide is a valid account name on Veritas. If it is, you will have a chance to test the passphrase by authenticating with your web account name and the passphrase for the account. If successful, you will receive a message letting you know that this passphrase is the one you will use to login to the account on Webserve. If authentication fails, the owner may reset the passphrase for the account to something new by going to (authenticate with a personal username/passphrase): https://ams.iu.edu/group_account/PasswordReset.aspx.

If you are able to successfully authenticate but are unable to authenticate to Webserve, you may need to synchronize the passphrase for your web account. You may do this by going to Passphrase Maintenance. For the Network ID field, enter the web account username. For the remaining fields enter the network passphrase for the web account. If your passphrase meets the standards for passphrases you will not need to change it to something new. After you submit the request, wait 20 minutes and try to login to Webserve again.
