Accessing Veritas from Outside the Indiana University Network

For security reasons, only certain IP numbers are allowed to connect to Veritas. If you attempt to connect from a non-IU Internet service provider (ISP), such as AOL, Kiva, or Blue Marble, you will be denied access. Starting April 1, if you wish to connect to Veritas and you use a non-IU Internet Service Provider, you will need to make a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.

What is a Virtual Private Network?

A virtual private network, or VPN, allows you to temporarily join a private network across a public network. By creating an encrypted tunnel between two hosts (in this case, the non-IU Internet Service Provider and the IU Network) you will be able to authenticate and act as part of the IU network. Once authenticated, you will be able to access Veritas.

What do I need in order to make a VPN connection?

In order to make a VPN connection, you will need to have an IU Network ID and password. You should use your personal IU Network ID and password to make your VPN connection. Once connected, you will be able to SSH or FTP to your Veritas account using the www account username and password.

If you are not affiliated with IU but you do work for the University that requires you to access Veritas, you may be eligible to obtain a sponsored account which will give you an IU Network ID which you can use to make a VPN connection. To obtain one, a full time staff or faculty member in the department for which you are doing work needs to contact valid@indiana.edu. These accounts must be renewed every semester.

Are there any other alternatives to using VPN?

One alternative is to use the IU modem pool. For further information see Connecting to IUB: Dialin, PPP, Ethernet, and wireless.

A different solution is to use SSH to connect to your steel account. Once connected to your Steel account, you can access your Veritas account from Steel by typing the following at the command prompt:

ssh -l account_name veritas.ucs.indiana.edu

Replace account_name in the above line with the name of your account on Veritas. You will then be prompted for the WWW account password associated with that account.
